Measure Rotation. Choose the Right Technology.
Rotary position sensors for industrial and mobile machinery — from precision potentiometers and contactless Hall effect sensors to incremental and absolute encoders.
One Function. Different Sensor Technologies.
Rotary position can be measured using several different sensing principles. The right choice depends on the application.
Required lifetime, accuracy, mechanical integration, environmental conditions, signal type and cost all influence whether a potentiometer, Hall effect sensor or encoder is the most suitable solution.
Comtrium supports machine and system manufacturers in selecting the sensor technology around the actual operating requirements rather than around a predefined component.
Three Technologies for Rotary Position Sensing.
From simple analogue position feedback to contactless sensing and high-resolution digital position information.
Potentiometrar
A proven solution for analogue rotary position measurement. Potentiometers are available in different sensing technologies, mechanical formats and electrical configurations depending on lifetime, precision and application requirements.
Halleffekt givare
Hall effect technology provides contactless rotary position measurement for applications where long life, low mechanical wear and robust operation are important.
Incremental & Absolute Encoders
Encoders are used where high resolution, pulse-based feedback or absolute angular position is required. Available interfaces can include incremental output, CANopen, SAE J1939 and RS485.
What Does the Application Need?
The sensing technology should be selected around the machine requirements, mechanical integration and required output signal.
More Than Just an Angle.
A reliable position sensor solution depends on the mechanical, electrical and environmental requirements being considered together.
Measuring Range
Define the required mechanical angle, whether the movement is limited or continuous, and the useful electrical range.
Output Signal
Analogue voltage, potentiometric output, incremental pulses, CANopen, SAE J1939 or another digital interface.
Mechanical Interface
Shaft diameter, hollow shaft, mounting geometry, available space and mechanical tolerances affect sensor selection.
Environment
Temperature, water, dust, vibration and shock determine which sensor platform is suitable for the application.
Position Feedback Throughout the Machine.
Rotary position sensors are used in operator controls, steering systems, hydraulic functions and mechanical machine assemblies.
Controls & HMI
Position sensing in joysticks, pedals, rotary controls and other operator interfaces.
Steering & Articulation
Angular measurement for steering systems, articulated vehicles and rotating chassis mechanisms.
Boom & Arm Position
Position feedback for booms, arms, attachments and articulated machine functions.
Actuators & Valves
Rotary position feedback for actuators, valves and industrial mechanical systems.
